Steve Vickers - In Loving Memory

The British Drum Corps community, and indeed the wider World of Drum Corps, has lost a true friend and champion with the passing of Steve Vickers.

For Steve, UK Drum Corps was never simply something to report on from a distance. As the long-time publisher of Drum Corps World, he crossed the Atlantic time and again to be with us in person — to watch, listen, encourage and, most importantly, share in the experience with the rest of the world.

Steve’s connection with Drum Corps United Kingdom reached back to the very beginning. He was there for the inaugural DCUK Championship in 1980, and over the years he returned to Britain for at least six championships, becoming a familiar and warmly welcomed presence within the British drum corps family.

Among those visits, his trip to Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, in September 2009 remains particularly memorable. During a vacation, Steve made the journey to attend the 30th Anniversary DCUK Championships, where he immersed himself in the weekend and produced an extensive feature for Drum Corps World. But, as was so often the case with Steve, his contribution did not end when the last corps left the field.

For generations of Drum Corps participants, Steve was a link between communities separated by an ocean but united by a shared passion. His photographs, reports and stories preserved moments that might otherwise have been forgotten, while his personal friendships created connections that lasted far beyond the Championships themselves.

Steve Vickers will be remembered not only for the countless pages he devoted to Drum Corps, but for the enthusiasm, generosity and friendship he brought to the activity. To those in Britain who knew him, he was much more than the publisher of Drum Corps World. He was one of our own — a friend who kept coming back, a supporter who believed in British Corps, and a familiar face whose presence made the World of Drum Corps feel a little smaller.

For those who attended the Drum Corps International Championships over the years, and especially in more recent times in Indianapolis, you would almost always find Steve in his seat — the same seat, almost on the 50-yard line — supporting every performing unit across the three-day event. That was Steve: there because he wanted to be there, watching, listening and cheering for the performers he cared so deeply about. 

His passing leaves an empty place on both sides of the Atlantic. But the memories he helped create, the stories he preserved and the friendships he forged will remain.

Rest in peace, Steve. And thank you for always making the journey.
